I want to take a minute and talk to chiropractors who have been out of school for a couple of years but things haven’t gone according to plan. There is a joke that I’ve heard a lot, “If you want to make God laugh, show Him your plans.” It’s one of those jokes that’s funny and painful all at the same time.
Most chiropractors graduate with hopes and dreams of a better tomorrow. They want to help a lot of people and make a good living doing it. That’s not asking too much, is it?
Unfortunately, life doesn’t always work out the way we plan. In fact, my experience tells me that life rarely works out the way we plan…and that’s frustrating. It’s especially frustrating in a world where you are getting bombarded from success gurus and seminar speakers telling you to write out BIG goals, make a vision board, create your own destiny…the world is your oyster!
A lot of people who get paid to speak, sell books, and have coaching programs will make success sound easy. They make progress sound like a foregone conclusion…especially if you follow their proven formula. But that’s not really how success works.
Mike Tyson once said, “Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.” I LOVE that quote because it’s the harsh reality of success. Anyone and everyone who has truly been successful has had to take a punch in the mouth from life. It doesn’t matter if it’s in your personal life or your professional life. You won’t ever be successful if you can’t take a punch.
Why do I say all that? I know what it’s like to struggle. I know what it’s like to be crushed when life doesn’t turn out the way you had planned. I know what it’s like to get stuck in a rut.
Part of me just wants to offer a word of encouragement to struggling/frustrated chiropractors. I want to let you know that you are NOT alone. What you are feeling happens to a LOT of chiropractors…most just don’t talk about it. We try to put lipstick on a pig. We want everyone to think we are OK when we really aren’t.
The other part of me wants to tell you to suck it up, buttercup. Everyone fails. Everyone struggles. Everyone has a hard time. You can either sit in it and let life pass you by, or you can learn from it and grow. Something I used to tell my patients is this, “You can either do something about it now, or you can let it get worse and do something about it then. It’s up to you.”
The bottom line is that life is hard and it rarely goes as planned. I realize that doesn’t sell books or seminar tickets, but it’s the truth. If you want to be successful, you are going to have to take some punches. You are going to have to get back up. Just make sure you learn something from those punches. It’s really STUPID to let life punch you over and over again without learning to duck. Struggles and failures are an opportunity to learn. What are you doing with your opportunity?
